5 Ways to Reduce Premature Skin Aging

As you grow older, the internal body processes slow down, taking much longer to turnover, recover, or even recharge. This gap leaves room for premature aging, which typically appears as fine lines, wrinkles, and fatigue during the late 20s or early 30s. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce signs of intrinsic (controlled by the genes) and extrinsic (controlled by the environment and lifestyle) aging:

1.      Stop using skincare products that burn

If your skin stings or burns after the application of a product, it means that it’s causing irritation. Irritated skin tends to look older. However, you may continue to use anti-aging medications prescribed by your dermatologist even if they sting or burn.

Likewise, scrubbing your skin with harsh cleansers can also irritate the skin further; you should opt for a gentle cleanser that glides onto your skin to remove dirt, pollution, or makeup.

2.      Wash and moisturize

Perspiration (heavily sweating) can also cause skin irritation. So, in case you’ve been wearing a helmet or a hat, rinse your skin as soon as you get the chance too.

Ideally, you must wash your face twice daily but slather on a generous amount of facial moisturizer right after. Moisturizers tend to trap water into the skin, making it appear more youthful.

3.      Protect your skin from the sun

If you haven’t heard enough of it already, we’d say it out loud one more time: put on some sunscreen that’s water-resistant and higher than SPF 30! Sun protection is essential, so sun-protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV protection sunglasses must be a part of your outfit.

On that note, if you love getting a tan, you should opt for a self-tanner rather than getting a tan from the sun. The sun emits harmful UV rays that can cause your skin to age prematurely.

4.      A Healthy Lifestyle

You must exercise on most days of the week and always intake a healthy, well-balanced diet. Moderate exercise can boost your immune system by improving circulation, while plentiful fresh vegetables and fruits can prevent any damage leading to aging. Moreover, sugary foods and refined carbohydrates should be avoided as they accelerate skin aging.

5.      Smoking and drinking

Smoking speeds up the aging process, resulting in wrinkles and a dull complexion. Alcohol does no good in this domain either; it dehydrates the skin to damage skin cells making the skin appear rough and older. So, stop smoking and quit drinking!
