Artisan Profile
Nepalese/Tibetan Himalayan cashmere is regarded as some of the world's softest cashmere. Cashmere is both light and wonderfully smooth while still keeping you warm. Cashmere is made from a goat's softest undercoat, and one scarf requires the wool of three goats!
All of our cashmere scarves and throws are handwoven by blind, deaf, or disabled weavers in Pokhara, Nepal. We collaborate with a local non-profit to provide them with the materials, training, and support they need to become self-sufficient through weaving. Disabled people in Nepal face discrimination in mainstream society. They have few, if any, job opportunities. Weaving allows them to live a more independent life, boosts their self-esteem, and enhances their family's treatment of them. The group also helps the disabled population by donating white canes, hearing aids, and wheelchairs, providing food, medicine, and other items to aged-care homes, assisting the destitute and distributing relief to earthquake and landslide victims. These are our favourite pieces since they benefit such a great cause!
