Basil is a spice and culinary plant that is grown in dozens of different varieties throughout the world. Certain plants produce tiny leaves that reach only a few inches in height before being harvested, while others can reach multiple feet in height and remain year-round. Basil essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves of the Ocimum basilicum plant found in India.
