Profile of the Artist
Sabahar's purpose is to provide Ethiopian craftspeople with respectful, ethical, and sustainable employment possibilities while showcasing their weavers' talents to the globe. They handcraft gorgeous textiles from natural fibres, drawing inspiration from Ethiopia's historic weaving traditions. The beauty of handspun thread is a rare item in today's fast-changing world of mechanized textile manufacturing.
From the spinning of the thread through the weaving of the fabric, the entire process is done by hand. Hand spinning is a technique passed down from mother to daughter, and the majority of rural women use it to augment their income. Sabahar pays respect to this legacy by sourcing hand-spun cotton thread from an Addis Ababa-based network of women. Because the majority of spinning is done during leisure time, it can be a potential source of additional money for women.
For millennia, hand weaving has been a way of life in Ethiopia. Almost all Ethiopian traditional attire is still woven on handlooms. Weaving is a passed-down skill from father to son, which explains why practically all weavers in Ethiopia are male. While the procedures have generally stayed consistent over time, the patterns, colours, and designs have become increasingly complicated. A weaver can manufacture one to three scarves every day, depending on the level of detail in the pattern.
